Stick around for the next 10 months of so to hear all the good, bad and extremely ugly of the program and my experience. Americorps NCCC is a 10-month community service program in which eager young adults do whatever they are asked to in order to get educational awards, free room and board, and that warm fuzzy feeling in their hearts.

Project: Habitat for Humanity, building houses
Place: New Orleans
Housing: Camp Hope

Why am I doing it? I figure that given my love for television, movies and theater, there's a good chance I'll spend a great deal of my life making entertainment and not necessarily helping others.
Therefore, before I've got the lease, the contract, the husband etc to tie me down, why not have an adventure and do something positive that could really open my eyes to much of what is going on in the US.
It's a challenge for so many facets of who I am now, and that intrigues me.
A Washington, DC native and recent graduate of Ohio University's Telecommunications Program, Shira is sad to be leaving her friends and family but thrilled to embark on the bumpy road that is Americorps NCCC.
